Wool Pickers are necessary to tease, open, and blend fibers preparing them for hand or drum carding. Carding un-teased fibers will eventually lead to damaged drum carder teeth. This is the best time during processing to achieve color blends or mixes in wool types, such as Mohair with Wool or Silk with Alpaca, etc. Dyed or multi-colored fibers, can be blended together in the picker before spinning to create some fascinating yarns. Try adding a little glitz for some real pizzazz. There are many differences in fleece types, between and from animals of the same breed. With a picker these differences can be evened out so that the yarn is identical from beginning to end making it a joy to spin. It is best to use clean washed wool in the picker, using raw un-washed wool will gunk up the picker teeth making it hard to clean out. The larger vegetable mater like hay, burrs, and leaves will not fall out during picking, these are best removed by hand. The wool pickers main purpose is to open the locks in preparation of carding or you may spin directing from the fluffy clouds of fiber that falls from the back of the picker. The picker comes with a clamp, a wool picker rake and instructions. The picker has a locking bar to keep the arm from swinging when not in use. There is a tray in the back of the picker to catch dirt and debris that falls from the wool during picking. The rocker arm is adjustable to suit many different types of wool. There are over 225 extremely sharp teeth on our wool picker. The picker is made of hardwood maple and a hard wood maple veneer. It is heavy and weighs around 28 pounds.
The cost for the wool picker is $375.00 plus shipping and handling. (depending on your location shipping and handling can be $35.00 to $50.00) |
